This morning I read that Steve Fonyo has been stripped of his Order of Canada. This just seems so wrong to me. How can this special honor be taken away?
Admittedly, Steve Fonyo has had some troubles in his life since his successful run across Canada which raised millions of dollars for cancer research. These troubles have been largely of his own making.
But, should anyone lose an award that they have earned - no matter what they do with their life afterwards? I think not.
The award was to mark an achievement which was important to Canada and Canadians. If we take the award away, does this undo all that was achieved? Can we really unring that bell?
Give the Order of Canada back to Steve Fonyo...talk about kicking a guy when he's down!

I have to admit that I was thinking along similar lines when I heard the news. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stephanie, for this award, I am just so tickled!!! I feel honored, and I would sure give you an award if I knew how to do it! I'm still trying to learn how to make a link in my blog to another post, so far unsucesfuly! Is there a way I can put the award on my sidebar? I continue to really enjoy your posts and look forward to them each day. Your posts are so special to me. I don't know this man in your post today, but I completly agree with you that the award was for his achievement, not his personal life, no matter what he did. What an awful thing to do to him. People are on the whole too judgemental, I think. So this in an insightful post and something that is good for us all to remember. No one is perfect.
ReplyDeleteSome stories are just sad, aren't they?
ReplyDeleteI do not know who he is or what the order of Canada is for that matter. But, it does seem to me that once you have received an award or an honor it should be yours to keep. It seems in rather bad taste to take it away.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who he is either, but I'm inclined to agree with you. The only justification for taking it away would be if it was falsely earned e.g. olympic medals won with the help of drugs.
