Cheez!

So, on Wednesday, I was cruising by the magazine display in a local store and saw the Interweave Knits for spring.  I don't subscribe and I don't always buy it.  I used to subscribe to a knitting magazine and found that only half the issues actually had something I would knit in them.

So, I let that subscription lapse and now I just pick up the ones that have a pattern in that appeals to me.  It's rare for there to be more than one that really makes my fingers want to grab needles and cast on. There might be lots more to read about but not on first glance.  Just sayin'.

As I browsed through the latest IK, I was immediately drawn to  the Yggdrasil Afghan.  You can understand how this would have caught my attention...it's gorgeous!  But when I got it home, I discovered that the instructions were only available on-line - for a price, I assumed.  I wasn't ready to knit so didn't look.   Guess I should have stood and read more closely at the store.  I know they love it when browsers read cover to cover and inspect the fine print.

Then, this morning, on IK's Knitting Daily email, came the offer of a free download for this pattern.  Now, I know this is the perfect way to get new subscribers and I know that's the aim.  But, c'mon guys...this is just a little sneaky.

  1. This was unfair! Is this a picture from the magazine? It's a bold pattern! what color will you make it?

  2. I know what you mean. I had a subscription for a year or two, then went without for a year, and now I've just resigned up but it's true, they don't always appeal to me. I should just buy off the shelf. I can't believe they showed a pattern but didn't offer it? That seems wrong to me.

  3. The photo is from the magazine...I bought it.

Rose...the pattern is offered but only on-line. There are a couple of others in that issue like that, too.

  4. Very sneaky indeed! You will be far wiser the next time, though.

I am saddened by the tricks marketers are using these days. You can hardly believe any company anymore...there's often something in the fine print OR (even worse) something they deliberately left out.

However, it truly is a knockout afghan!

  5. I'm letting my subscription to this magazine lapse. There hasn't been anything in the last two issues that would suit me so it's not worth it. Too bad about the afghan...ciao

  6. A very sneaky move on their part but these days companies will do/say anything to make a buck.

That is a pretty afghan in the photo.

  7. I loved the winter issue, but the current one, not so much. I'm like you, I only buy what I think I'll use at least once.

  8. Oh! That afghan is just stunning. You say it's being offered free now?

  9. Yup. Just click on the link to the the afghan in my post.

  10. I think you just need to be a member of Knitty Daily to get the pattern - not subscribe to the magazine. And it is free to sign up for Knitty Daily. At least that is what I gathered when I clicked the link...

  11. I saw the download, and did it. But then I researched the name, and it comes from a Norwegian myth, some say it has to do with a creation myth and some say, no, it's only a world tree. And with that my enthusiasm died! I could alter it and make it in a four season tree:)
