"Barges - I would like to go with you.
I would like to sail the ocean blue".
These are lines from a song that is popular at almost all Girl Guide (and maybe Girl Scout) campfires. I always wondered what was so attractive about a barge. These are the kind of barges that I know about - and I'm sure that the song must be about another kind of barge.
I do think they are interesting and have a kind of weather-beaten beauty of their own. I just wouldn't imagine that traveling the seven seas on one would be all that much fun. There are always barges like this in the water here...loaded as well as empty ones waiting for a load.

ANNI'S RUBY TUESDAY
I think it is kind of pretty. Well, it has a certain simple charm.
ReplyDeletea very interesting picture in a good way.
ReplyDeleteWorking barges and tugs are always interesting to watch. The one in your photo has a lofty name.
ReplyDeleteThese barges are so evocative of my childhood in Vancouver. Nice photos, especially the reflection in the second one.
ReplyDeletevery wise way to put it. the worn look is more interesting. :-0
ReplyDeleteI bet it's interesting to watch the cargo pass by. Is that one hauling sand?
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures of the Seaspan barges with the city in the background. They are definitely part of the scene.
ReplyDeleteThat's sure an unusual picture, you don't see any of those around here! I always wondered how they keep afloat!
ReplyDeleteOo, I'm so glad I didn't miss this. If it's ocean going, I love it. Barges are fascinating. I watched one make its way up the Columbia River near Astoria, OR a few years back and I daydreamed of what it was hauling.
ReplyDeleteWorking barges are definitely visually interesting and a great photographic subject but I'm with you, they look to grubby to really appeal as a mode of transportation.

Very nice watery pictures. I haven't heard the song (or maybe I've forgotten it -- many years even since I was a parent of a Girl Scout ;>). But on the Columbia River between the States of Oregon and Washington the barges used to (maybe still do) sell a few passenger tickets -- there's a kind of cabin for crew and I guess the passengers in the tug in front of the long barge. I guess the long, slow voyage would be a way to get away completely (or at least it would have been before cell phones).
ReplyDeletethose are really nice photos, I miss being near the sea.....
