A-Z Challenge: B

B is for Blossoms

In the spring, there is one plant that has masses of blossoms.  It flowers like mad when everything else stubbornly remains asleep.  And that is the heather.  We have two varieties that bloom in the spring.  One light pink which makes a lovely border to one of the garden beds.  That would be the light one above.  Aren't the little blossoms intricate?

Then, we have a second, solitary plant out under the fir tree.  It seems to have had a good winter because it's showing off right now.  I liked the color when I saw it in the nursery and so, we have one.

But do you see the bonus B-word?  Yes!  An intrepid early bee has come to explore.  I think having your back against a rock, sitting in the spring sunshine is likely to entice anyone to linger a while with you.  This bee spent many minutes sampling each tiny pink blossom.

And, then!  just as I was taking my camera inside, I spied my favorite blossom of all time.  The first one of spring for me is always the most special.  A brilliant pop of blossom-y sunshine.  Oh, I do love dandelions.

  2. Heather is so pretty! I like the light pink the best. Wonder if it'll grow down here? I have a smoothie recipe that calls for dandelion greens that I'm going to try this week!

  3. So this is really Heather???? I have never seen any before, how wonderful!!!! In reading the romance books, you always read about the heather on the moors! That's a great bee catch. And I also love dandelions, look forward to them every spring. Your shot is lovely!

  8. Lovely bee, I haven't seen any out yet. Yesterday doing a little garden clean up I heard one and took cover. Soon they will be out here everywhere. We are just a few days into our Spring right now as the snow is still in patches in our back yard.

I didn't know that about you, dandelions who would have thought...send me your address I'll mail you mine, hugs

  12. We've had a lot of bees (and wasps!) buzzing about in these warm, Spring days. The unseasonably high temperatures have seen epidemics of greenfly/aphids - just as well there are plenty of ladybirds to deal with them. I've taken to 'kidnapping' the unsuspecting red beetles from their basking positions in the sun and 'encouraging' them onto my poor, aphid-ravaged plants!

As for Dandelions - I think they get a bad press! You'd think plant breeders would try cultivating them to breed different colours. I'd certainly purchase them in red or pink; with a Dandelion's constitution they'd thrive anywhere!

Love those close-up shots of Heather - beautiful en-masse on the moors, like pink 'foam', but each tiny blossom is wonderful in its' own right!
