I seem to be on a shawl roll this week. Or maybe I'm preparing for the winter. Which doesn't seem to to want to leave us. I'm assured that summer will actually come. I am reminded that June is ever a changeable and fickle month. I've tried whispering that comfort to the veggies in the garden which are reluctant to grow. I mean, really, a plant needs the sun to get big and strong, right? So, I'm knitting shawls.
Today I have one finished and one on the needles. This first one is more of a shawlette but it used up a stray skein of Briggs & Little that I've been thinking about lately. I love the color which reminds me of the deep ocean, hence my name: Deep Pacific Waves. I have used a pattern by Patricia Martin which she calls Mizzle. It will be a lovely neck-warmer in a few months.
And, still in the works, is my Greenwinged Phoenix. Last year, I started another shawl pattern with this yarn. I wasn't very happy with the result. The lace was quite intricate and the tonal yarn wasn't a very good showcase for the lovely pattern. It went into hibernation while I thought about it. Then, I picked up a copy of Creative Knitting and there was the perfect vehicle for this yarn: Charybdis by Kerry Milani. Into the frog pond went the lacy stuff and something much more beautiful is now emerging. I know that phoenixes don't actually come from ponds but you can see the inspiration.
And speaking of magazines, this morning I discovered that I have won a copy of the newest mag on the block: Noro Knitting. Simply Sock Yarn held a flash contest on their blog. You never know what your comment can get you. Can't wait to see it.
So today, I'm taking the whole day off, knitting my pretty green yarn and getting out into the garden before the rain comes - again. Perhaps I should swathe the young tomato plants in yarn blankies.
Congrats on your win Stephanie!
ReplyDeleteYour shawls look really cosy, and indeed would come in useful here at the moment, cos winter doesn't seem to want to leave us either. I find it amazing how similar our weathers are, either side of a huge ocean.
My poor plants could also use shawls! And a raincoat, lol!
Your green yarn, and the shawl you're knitting with it, are lovely, delicate and fine. I can understand why you'd want to take the full day off to knit it.
Love, love, & love! Congrats on the magazine. Looks like it should be fun!
ReplyDeletePS Our weather has been terrible too. I've marked the calendar for Monday as the only day decent enough to mow the lawn in a two week period. Stupid rain & fertilizer - it is going to be a slog!
I have never heard of a shawlette but I like it! I think it would be perfect for my mother and aunt!
ReplyDeleteYour blue shawl is gorgeous, but that phoenix creation has captured my imagination!! Oh, I love that yarn!! Can't wait to see the FO. Congratulations on your magazine win. I saw that one in the LYS Friday and wished I had put it in my basket!! ;) Enjoy your weekend. blessings ~ Tanna
ReplyDeleteThe shawl is lovely, and I love the shade of green in the second picture.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on winning the magazine. I shall await your review!
ReplyDeleteI love both shawls, but that green one? It's beautiful!
