Mutation?

Several years ago, we stayed at a B&B in Peachland, BC. It wasn't the house that was remarkable, it was all the hollyhocks that were growing there. And not just at this house...they were everywhere!

We went for a walk and found them growing wild along the roadside. We gathered seeds of several shades of pale pink through dark red. We took those seeds home and planted them in our garden.

The next spring, we waited and hoped - only one plant came up. This is the color that we got that first summer. And every summer since.

Until now. Look at the beautiful red one that just appeared this past week. I don't think it's a mutation, really, since it has it's own stalk. But it sure took it's time germinating! I'm mystified... it's a very nice surprise.
